Nontechnical skills every project manager needs
To succeed in any profession you need to strike a balance between the art and science of that profession. Science is about process, logic, practices etc. But art is about knowing what else is required to complete the work. It works as glue between isolated steps, stages, process or practices. How much tight a string should be on a guitar to play it well is about art. It is not about measuring tension of string using some tool but listening the sound after striking the cord. What combination of color, what stroke and in what direction will improve the painting is about art. Project management profession is not exception of this art. This is what generally referred as Nontechnical skills of project manager.
Global standard on Project Management, Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) of PMI emphasizes this as an important tool & technique for every project manager. In PMBOK it is referred as Interpersonal Skills. The success of project hugely depends upon the proficiency of a project manager on these skills.
You cannot learn these skills by force, nor because somebody is paying for it and you sit in class to hear from experts. You learn these skills by your own struggle. But the struggle can path can be shorten when you have some tricks and tips around topics. Training, coaching, mentoring helps you in shortening that path.
I wanted to learn flute. I love to hear flute. I purchased it and took help from couple of people around me to play it but even after so many years I cannot play it well. I have learned some basics of the music and flute in last many years but still very desperate to learn this. Why I am not learning this? The deep passion inside! Priority! Patience!
In project we struggle even after knowing every process, customer, technology. Primary reason of struggle is either awareness or proficiency of these soft skills.
